Frequently Asked Questions

What is mental performance coaching?

Mental performance coaching is a powerful partnership between a coach and athlete designed to enable you to be in a peak mental state when it matters most. The coaching focuses on helping you understand the tools and habits that are essential to implement for you to consistently develop a peak mindset.

Working together over time, you start to implement these tools and develop these habits, your default mindset will shift and you will start to play better. Plus a really good coach will be able to pinpoint root-causes of under-performance and help you solve these root causes. In this way, the you can go from good to great, and from great to the very best.

Why mental performance coaching?

Many say athletics is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. But whatever the split is, there is no doubt that mental game plays a huge factor in an athlete’s success.

Many are awakening to this fact. And so there is a growing interest in getting mentally fit. And there is a strong interest in this unique, peak mental state: the zone or the flow state… where everything happens – PERFECTLY – without thinking about it.

But how do I get in the zone as often as I like? That is the question I like to help you realize for your game and life.

What results can I expect from mental performance coaching?

While results can vary by athlete given factors beyond the coach’s control (their skill levels, diet, rest patterns, strength and conditioning levels, and the role of other coaches in their lives), a good program and coach will be able to help an athlete play with higher levels of confidence, energy, and enjoyment. The caveat is that the athlete also has to do their part and put in the work!

What should I look for in a mental performance coaching program?

Standard mental performance curriculum’s often use these (very good and strong) tools to aid you in being a peak mental state:

  • Goal setting
  • Positive self-talk
  • Visualization
  • Mindfulness

In additional to covering these topics, I aim to go past symptoms and get at root-causes of peak mental performance:

  • Core self / identity – we act consistent with our core sense of self, or identify. If you are not performing at the level you’d like, you must transform the way(s) you view yourself so that you can realize the breakthroughs in your game that you deserve.
  • Beliefs – our beliefs dictate our actions and emerge from our sense of identify. Together with transforming your identify, it is important to let go of beliefs that are holding you back and fostering beliefs that unleash your power (especially at the sub-conscious level)
  • Emotions – positive emotions keep you in the game and help you be at your peak. Learning to cultivating emotions of confidence and certainty when you need them most is critical for success

Whatever program and coach you decide to follow, it is important to make sure they go to root-causes of mental performance. To be sure to ask about this area and how they target root causes to get sustained results.

Who is a good fit for mental performance coaching?

All athletes are a good fit. Even if you think you are already mentally strong, you might be surprised to learn new tips, tricks, and better ways of doing things.

Now, there is one caveat to this.

No mental performance program can make you better if you don’t want to do the work. There is a famous saying, “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it.”

Because of this fact, I typically see athletes with these qualities get the best results from mental performance coaching:

  • Hunger for success.
  • Introspective / self-aware.
  • Openness to trying new things.
  • A strong work ethic.

Why do you do your coaching on the phone?

I am able to help a lot more people who need my help when I don’t limit myself to office visits. And I really enjoy working with a variety of athletes from different sports, too.

Also, I was trained to coach over the phone. My training taught me to pick up on subtle nuances in the voice and to use my intuition to guide the athlete to the best answers for their situation. While I can do in person, my best coaching happens over the phone!

You do not need to be very talkative or communicative to have success on the phone with me. The strong, silent types can do just as well if not better than the very talkative types because I can get information from them in less time :). Either way, I flex my style accordingly to get the best results.

How much do your services cost?

I can’t quote a price on the internet. My services are scaled for the audience and their background.

I offer a free consultation to everyone and can discuss pricing after that if we both happen to be interested in working together. There is no hard sales offer after the consultation; we both need to feel like there is a good fit in order to move forward.
